URGENT- UPDATE ON SB 1688, AON’S COMPENSATION DISCLOSURE BILL
To: All NAIFA Illinois Members
Action: Contact your State Senator and State Representative and request opposition to Aon’s efforts to impose their settlement agreement disclosure requirements on all independent agents.
Background: This Monday, March 12th, Aon Corporation issued a press release saying that is supports Governor Blagojevich's health care plan and, by inference, the Gross Receipts Tax to fund it.
Suspicions that their statement was connected to SB 1688, Aon's bill to impose their settlement agreement on the rest of the industry, were confirmed yesterday as the Governor's Office lobbied Senator Bill Haine, Chairman of the Senate Insurance Committee, to release the bill from the Committee. Pat Ryan, Aon’s Chairman, made personal calls to members of the Committee yesterday.
Senator Haine withstood the pressure and continues to support our position in opposition to the legislation.
Since the bill was not “posted” for the Insurance Committee Hearing today, it cannot be called for a vote. However, Aon’s lobbyists may well try other legislative options including waiving the posting notice, filing a motion to discharge the bill from Committee, or if that’s unsuccessful, amending it onto another bill.
Obviously the issue has now risen to a new level, directly connected to the Governor's health and tax plan and we will most likely be dealing with the issue until the General Assembly adjourns.
Please contact your State Senator and Representative’s Springfield office and ask them to oppose any legislation containing Aon’s compensation disclosure language.
Dowload a sample letter (doc), talking points (doc), a synopsis of SB 1688 (pdf), AON position (pdf), and position paper (doc).
A legislator lookup that allows you to locate your legislators and their contact information is located on the right hand side of that web page.
Please attend our Legislative Day next Tuesday, March 20th!
All my best!
